Record book, 1811-1819.

This record book of the Board of Police of Portsmouth, N.H., for the period 1811 to 1819, was kept by various secretaries, including Samuel Sheafe ( - ) and Nathaniel March ( - ). The volume contains the lists of policemen selected during the town meetings held in March, the force's by-laws, and the proceedings of each monthly meeting of the force. The records of the latter include divisions into seven committees for patrolling the town, fines for nonattendance and failure to submit monthly reports, elections of officials, and notes taken on various legal questions (e.g., paying an officer's legal fees incurred from a lawsuit for assault and battery, and the posting of police laws in all schools accompanied by a monthly reading to the students). Committees were also organized to investigate gambling shops, illegal liquor sales, and stores that remained open after hours. The record book also contains detailed lists of fines imposed on specific members and the purposes for which the money was spent.
